I must admit, I have something of an obsession with natural deodorants. This was probably the first natural category I ever became interested in. I had a very patchouli centric summer in NYC at the beginning of my quest for the perfect formula. I eventually lapsed back into my dependance on Secret until I found THE ONE. It was perfect. It didn’t smell like anything. The ingredients were safe and gentle. I wasn’t sweaty or odorous. And then…it was reformulated. And it stopped working.
My obsession was renewed, and after trying over ten of the highest reviewed and recommended deodorants, these three were my standouts:
1- Lavanila - This formula most closely resembled the drugstore deodorants I grew up using. It’s a creamy stick formula that smells like girls, and keeps you from ruining your favorite blouses. It comes in 7 scents. Vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, or vanilla. Seriously. Seven variations on vanilla. I even wrote the company imploring them to make an unscented version, if not for me, then for men. No word back. But despite the fairly strong, sweet scent, it’s still the most effective and gentle I tried.
2- Soapwalla - I loved this deodorant. I had heard about it from clients and friends, and I was SO excited to try it. It’s the most natural formula on my list with a short ingredient list, many of which are organic. The herbal scented paste comes in a small jar, which you must scoop out and rub on to your skin. I found this easiest post shower when I was still slightly damp. My love affair ended when my underarms became dry and itchy, and I had to discontinue use. I’m quite sure I reacted to the baking soda, though it could have been the kaolin clay. It still tops my list of favorites because most people are totally fine with it, and it’s a standout formula.
3- Herban Cowboy Natural For Her - I bought this on a whim at Whole Foods. I basically buy a deodorant every time I go get groceries. I was pleasantly surprised by how well this sheer stick works, and very pleased with the barely there powdery scent. The first ingredient is propanediol, which the company site swears is a non-toxic corn derived humectant, classified by the EWG as low risk. It also does contain a small amount of fragrance, but is free from other worrisome ingredients. I love how clear it glides on, and it really keeps you smelling fresh throughout the day.
Honorable Mention- Weleda Wildrose Deodorant - This deodorant did absolutely nothing for me on its own, but I do love to keep it at work for a mid-day touch up. It eliminates bacteria, and because it’s a spray, you’re not adding more cream. If you are a woman who merely glows, but never perspires, you may find this rose scented spray to be enough for you!
I will definitely keep you posted as I try more formulas. (I have three waiting right now.) I’m still on the hunt for the holy grail!
I would love to hear what your favorites are and what did or didn’t work for you. My next challenge is to MAKE my own deodorant at home!
