This is a question I've been asking myself a lot lately. Why green beauty? And what exactly does green beauty mean?
I find green beauty to be the most appealing catchall phrase to describe beauty and skincare products formulated without irritating and unhealthy ingredients. To some this might just mean paraben free. To others it could mean vegan, or completely plant based. I seek out products without synthetic fragrance, sulfates, pthalates, propylene glycol, parabens, mineral oil, and silicones (mostly!), to name a few. But why?
My green beauty conversion started with acne. My skin was problematic as a teenager, and right into adulthood. Three years ago my own mother said my skin was the worst she'd ever seen it. A stint on accutane, prescription retinol, and acne product regimens were doing little. I relied heavily on my skills as a makeup artist to cover up. I noticed that mineral oil based skincare and silicone based foundations (aka ALL of them) seemed to exacerbate my issues. Never a mineral powder fan, I discovered RMS foundation.
I loved it so much I wondered, what else can I convert? And little by little I am swapping out my makeup kit, skincare, fragrance, body and hair care products for their green counterparts. My skin isn't perfect, but it's the best it's ever been. I rarely see a blemish, and I get compliments on my skin daily!
I've recently been very lucky to work with several women who have fought devastating cancers, and I've been very interested in their take on beauty products. These women are given strict lists of ingredients to avoid from their doctors. I've found that many of the skin irritants I avoid are also linked to stimulating certain cancers and other health issues.
There's enough fear based motivation out there, and that's not my modus operandi. My approach is if you can find something you love, and it happens to be green, then why not switch? Every little bit makes an impact. I'm passionate, but not fanatic. We are so lucky to have high performance green options. Just a few years ago none of my favorite products existed. Now there are incredible new brands and formulations launching all the time!
What are your thoughts on green beauty? Why the interest? Why the switch?
